Commercial buildings often use concrete block, tilt-up concrete, precast concrete or metal stud framing instead of the wood framing common in houses. A solid wall can hold plaster directly when the surface is suitable. A framed wall needs metal lath, and the lath changes how thick the plaster becomes. ASTM C926 sets those nominal plaster thicknesses, so the build is tied to the base rather than to habit.

Concrete Block and Tilt-Up Walls

Concrete masonry units, often called concrete block, and tilt-up panels, cast flat on site and lifted upright, are solid plaster bases. Sound block or concrete can hold plaster without lath behind it, but the face has to be clean and open enough for the plaster to grip. Paint, sealer or form release can block that bond. Form release is the coating used in a mold so concrete lets go after it hardens. A sealed, painted or very smooth face may need wire fabric lath instead, while smooth cast-in-place concrete may be roughened or receive a bonding agent. ASTM C926 publishes nominal thickness by the base the plaster covers. Nominal thickness is the target thickness, not a promise that every point on the wall measures exactly the same. Over metal lath, three coats build to a nominal 7/8 inch. Over unit masonry or concrete, three coats build to a nominal 5/8 inch. Two coats over unit masonry build to a nominal 1/2 inch, and two coats over cast-in-place or precast concrete build to a nominal 3/8 inch. Lath needs plaster around and behind the mesh, while a solid base already gives the plaster a backing.

Fire-Resistance Ratings and Commercial Wall Assemblies

Fire-resistance ratings come up often on commercial work, usually where your drawings call for a wall that separates two uses, two tenants or two parts of a building. The question may reach a plasterer as whether stucco gives the wall a rating. The answer is about the complete wall assembly, because the rating belongs to the wall that was tested or listed, not to one coating on it.

A Rating Belongs to a Tested Assembly

A fire-resistance rating is measured on an assembly, meaning the whole wall, every layer and fixing, built and tested as one thing. California Building Code section 703.2 determines ratings by ASTM E119 or UL 263, each of which is a furnace test of a complete wall rather than of a single material. The code accepts other routes to the same result, and every one of them describes a whole wall.

Applying a stucco coat over metal lath

Whether the wall is rated for one hour or two, that rating names the assembly, its layers and the way those layers are fastened. If gypsum sheathing, metal stud framing, portland cement plaster or another layer changes, the wall is no longer the same tested assembly. That is why a rated assembly is specified as a package rather than as a list of acceptable products.

Where Plaster Fits in a Rated Wall

On a rated wall the drawings name a listed design, a build already tested as a unit, and that design specifies the layers, thicknesses and fixings.
