Plastering services share one basic form: a troweled mineral coat goes on wet over a prepared plaster base, then hardens in place. The three kinds of work separate by location and backing. Exterior Plaster on Soffits, Ceilings and Site Features
Exterior plaster can belong above you, beside a patio or on a freestanding feature. A soffit is the underside of the roof overhang, seen from below, and a parapet is the low wall that carries on above a roof line. We work in portland cement plaster on soffits and porch or patio ceilings, on chimneys and parapets, and on garden and site walls, wherever the exterior surface needs that material.
A small exterior area can still take longer than a much larger open wall. Edges, returns and overhead positions slow the work per square foot because the metal lath and the framing under it carry the coat. On a chimney or site wall, more than one face is exposed, so the fixing under the coat counts before anyone judges the finish.
Interior Plaster on Walls and Ceilings
Interior plaster gives a room a hard mineral surface rather than a paint film on paper. Gypsum plaster and lime plaster are applied wet, so the coat becomes the face of the wall instead of sitting as a thin finish over board paper. That hardened face takes a trowel finish, which can be left flat or given movement by hand. The difference comes from the hand work, not from a printed texture.
Veneer plaster over blueboard is the common modern method for interior plaster. Interior repairs, fireplaces and feature walls are separate interior services, and keeping dust out of an occupied house belongs to the setup for that work.
Restoring Original Lath-and-Plaster Work
Older Chico houses can still have original plaster over wood lath. Wood lath is narrow wood strips nailed across the framing, and the original plaster was squeezed through the gaps so the wall could grip it. Where that original base is sound, you need repair rather than replacement.
A spray rig cannot reproduce a hand-floated surface, so restoration stays hand work and new work is matched to what remains. On a building put up before 1980, material is tested for asbestos and lead before anything is disturbed. What Plaster Is Made Of
Plaster is binder, sand and water, mixed wet and troweled onto a surface. The binder is one of three materials: gypsum, lime or portland cement. That ingredient changes how the coat sets, how hard it becomes and how much movement it will tolerate. Sand is not filler. Sand gives the coat body, sets the possible texture and helps control how much the plaster moves as it hardens.
Gypsum Plaster
Gypsum plaster starts with gypsum, a soft mineral that is ground and heated. When water is added back, the plaster hardens through a chemical set, which means a reaction inside the material makes it firm rather than air drying alone. On an interior wall, that set turns wet plaster into a hard face that can be finished before the room is out of use for long. Because that set does not depend on outdoor weather, gypsum can be worked predictably indoors and quickly enough for one visit. Repeated wetting softens gypsum, so it stays an indoor material. Gypsum is also the binder in veneer plaster and in blueboard.
Lime Plaster
Lime plaster hardens by carbonation. Carbonation is the slow return of carbon dioxide from the air into the lime, and that slow set leaves lime softer than cement. On old walls, that softer coat can move with the building instead of breaking away from it. Because the coat gives before the old wall does, lime lets a repair meet aged plaster without forcing a brittle patch into it. That is why original plaster on an older house is usually lime-based. Lime putty also gives polished interior plaster its depth, and lime is added to cement plaster so the wet material works under a trowel.
Cement Plaster, Which the Trade Calls Stucco
Portland cement plaster is cement, sand and water, almost always with lime added for workability. On an exterior wall, the plaster is applied over metal lath and a water-resistive barrier. The water-resistive barrier is the building paper or wrap behind the plaster, and that layer is the wall's real waterproofing. The cement coat is one part of an assembly rather than the whole wall.
Portland cement plaster is the hardest and least forgiving of the three binders, so we build control joints into it, deliberate breaks for the coat to move at. Those breaks let normal movement happen in planned locations instead of forcing random cracks through the field of plaster. ASTM C926 is the standard governing how cement plaster goes on.
Sand, Water and Why the Mix Matters
Sand grading shapes both the body of the coat and the face you see. Fine sand can take a smooth trowel finish, while coarser sand is needed for heavier texture. Water makes plaster spread, but extra water leaves more empty space behind as the coat hardens and weakens the finished surface.
We measure mix proportion for every batch rather than judging the material by eye. If one batch carries a different amount of water or sand, the difference can show later as a color change or a finish that does not match the surrounding area.
Veneer Plaster Over Blueboard
Veneer plaster gives a modern house a real plaster surface without rebuilding the wall like old solid plaster. A thin coat of gypsum plaster goes over blueboard, so you get a hard mineral face without the weight of wood lath and thick backing coats. For a room that already has modern framing, this is the normal way plaster finish is built.
The Blueboard Base
Blueboard is a gypsum panel made for plaster. Its face paper is treated so wet plaster can bond to it instead of soaking in and lifting the paper. Ordinary drywall is made for joint compound, tape and paint; wet plaster over that paper can fail because the board was not made to receive it.
The base has to be chosen before the walls are boarded. If standard drywall is already up, you cannot decide afterward that the finished surface will be veneer plaster without changing the surface first. Joint tape covers the seams so the plaster meets a continuous face rather than stopping and starting at every board edge.
Basecoat and Finish Coat
The basecoat fills and flattens the wall so the finish coat has a true surface to sit on. The finish coat is thin, and it becomes the surface you see and touch. Because gypsum has a chemical set, the two coats can follow each other closely rather than waiting for moisture to leave the wall.
The trowel finish can be flat and smooth, or the plasterer can work the surface by hand for movement. Decorative textures and color are their own service, but the decision starts with the coat because the finished wall is plaster, not paint over paper.
