Indoor stucco is not one material. Interior Fireplace Stucco: Refinishing the Surround

Interior fireplace stucco is the plaster on the face around your firebox, and it is the one plastered area in a room people stand close to and study. A ripple nobody would pick out on a stucco wall across the room is obvious on a surround, so we finish one above the standard we hold a wall to. Whether your fireplace is masonry or a framed box, we refinish it in place.

What a Plaster Fireplace Surround Is Built On

Plaster on a surround is a facing, and the backing under it decides the preparation. A masonry surround that has been in use is coated in soot and cooking residue, and plaster will not bond through either, so we degrease the brick and rake out the mortar joints, leaving grooves the scratch coat can grip. That scratch coat is the first, roughened layer of plaster, and we dampen the masonry before it goes on.

The other backing we meet is a framed box sheathed in cement board, a rigid panel made with cement rather than paper. Where a surface will not hold a groove, we brush on a bonding agent or fix self-furring lath over it. A bonding agent is a primer that fresh plaster can grip. If your surround is cracked through or moving, that is a structural question before it is a finish question.

Finishes That Suit a Fireplace Face

Which finish goes on a fireplace face is yours to choose. A smooth troweled finish is flat and even, while a mineral finish carries a fine texture, and its color is integral to the plaster. Hand-troweled plaster is worked in overlapping passes, so the face keeps slight variation across it.

Burnishing a lime plaster face, which means polishing the last coat hard with the trowel, gives it visible depth rather than the flat film of paint. That is the finish usually sold as Venetian plaster or marmorino: slaked lime laid on in thin coats and polished, and it goes on hardening for years by taking carbon dioxide back out of the air. How hard and how often we work the trowel sets the sheen and the color. Cement and lime plaster are noncombustible as materials. The finish is agreed with you from a sample before we touch the surround.

Where Our Work Stops and the Appliance Begins

Our plaster is a finish on the outer face of the surround. Behind that face, the firebox and its refractory lining belong to a different trade. The firebox is the chamber the fire burns in, and the refractory lining is the heat-resistant brick facing that chamber.

The clearances your fireplace requires are set by the manufacturer's listing and by whoever installed the unit, and a new finish outside changes none of them, so take those questions to your installer. A fire-resistance rating is a property of a whole tested assembly and never of a coating alone, so we do not claim one for plaster. What we handle is the face itself, from preparing what is behind it to running the coats and finishing it.

Interior Stucco on Walls, Ceilings and Masonry

Interior stucco covers the plaster work inside your building, and it goes onto almost any sound surface there. Which plaster goes on is settled by the substrate, the surface underneath that the plaster has to grip: the walls and ceilings of rooms you live in, block and masonry, or a single feature wall.

Masonry you can identify yourself. Block shows at a glance in a garage or a shop, and even under paint the joints usually leave faint lines across the wall. Put the back of your hand on it and it is cold and gives nothing, while a wall built over framing sits closer to room temperature and flexes under a push.

The rest is less obliging. A painted wall looks the same whatever is behind it, so we look at an edge where something is already cut in, a doorway edge or the side of a window return. Where nothing is exposed, we open a small area somewhere it will not show.

Living-Space Walls and Ceilings

Most of this work is a plaster finish in rooms you live in, run over a gypsum base. A gypsum base is a wall panel made to take plaster rather than paint, and the trade often calls it blueboard. We reinforce the joints between the panels first and then run the plaster across the wall in one continuous skin, so your stucco interior walls end up harder than a painted surface and take knocks better.

Painting interior stucco walls afterwards is a normal choice, and it wants a primer made for plaster. A finish coat can also be acrylic or polymer-modified, with polymer added so it flexes across hairline movement and takes traffic better; the trade-off is a film rather than a mineral surface, so it repairs differently.

Ceilings use the same system with more setup, and daylight crossing a ceiling at a low angle picks out every flat spot, so we work a ceiling to a tighter tolerance than a wall. The depth of your existing trim, door casings and outlet boxes sets how thick we can build.

Block and Masonry Walls Indoors

Indoor block turns up in garage and outbuilding conversions, in exposed block partitions and on shop and utility walls. These indoor stucco walls take a cement plaster rather than a gypsum one, because masonry can carry moisture through it and gypsum plaster does not tolerate water. We clean the concrete block back to something sound, dampen it, and give the scratch coat something to hold, either a bonding agent or joints raked out so the coat keys into them. Painted or sealed block will not take a direct bond, so the coating comes off or metal lath goes over it.

Look for efflorescence first, the white salt bloom left on a face as water dries out of the wall. It tells you water is moving through the masonry, and we deal with the water first.

Feature Walls, Niches and Alcoves

A feature wall, a niche or an arched alcove is one surface seen directly against everything beside it, which makes it harder than a whole room. The labor goes into the edges, where the plaster meets trim, glass, a painted wall or the ceiling. We stop the finish against a plaster stop, a thin metal edge the plaster runs into, which terminates it straight. An internal corner has to run true. Faux stucco interior walls, where a plain wall is given the look of stucco, get the same edge work, since that is what separates a finished feature from a patch of texture.

Interior Stucco Repair: Cracks, Loose Plaster and Water Damage

Interior stucco repair begins with telling apart what has actually gone wrong. Something behind the wall has moved; the plaster has lost its grip on its base; water has reached it; or the wood lath in an older house has given up. A patch put over the wrong finding comes back, so we diagnose a plaster repair before we price it. The first reading is one you can take yourself, with a hollow tap.

Cracks, Bulges and Loose Plaster

Two of those findings are mechanical. Crazing, a web of fine hairline cracks spread evenly over a surface, sits in the finish coat alone, so we fill it and refinish. A crack that runs a line follows something behind the plaster: a panel joint, the corner of an opening, or a framing member that has moved.

The hollow tap answers the other question. Knuckle the wall and listen. A solid note means the plaster is still stuck to its base; a drummy, empty note means it has let go behind. We cut loose plaster back to sound material, and we bed reinforcing mesh into the base coat across the join between the old plaster and the new, so the two are tied together before the finish goes back. On interior stucco wall repair where a wall takes knocks we use a polymer-modified mortar, a patching mix with polymer in it that flexes slightly and holds where a straight sand and cement mix cracks again.

Water-Damaged Plaster and What Is Behind It

Stained, soft or blown plaster indoors is a symptom, and the water damage has a cause behind the wall. What we find is usually a roof or flashing leak above, a plumbing failure inside the wall, or condensation forming on a cold surface. We trace that moisture source and see it stopped before new plaster goes back, because plaster laid over a live leak fails again in the same place. Moisture coming through an exterior wall from outdoors is a different repair.

Where mold is visible, a qualified independent specialist handles that assessment, because testing and removal are their own trade. Plaster that has dried out and is still bonded to its base can often be refinished instead of replaced.

Original Wood-Lath Plaster in Older Chico Homes

Chico's older houses were plastered before gypsum panels existed, over wood lath, thin timber strips nailed in rows across the framing with narrow gaps between them. Wet plaster pressed onto that lath squeezes through the gaps and hardens behind the strips into lugs called plaster keys, and those keys, rather than the nails, hold a lath and plaster ceiling up. When a ceiling sags or a wall sounds drummy in an old house, the usual cause is broken keys, not plaster that has reached the end of its life.

We reattach with plaster washers, wide metal discs screwed through the plaster into the lath, which pull the surface back tight. The original three-coat lime and gypsum surface is then refinished rather than skimmed over. Tearing out is a decision rather than a default, and it takes an original surface with it.

Matching the Finish That Is Already There

A repair is judged against the wall right beside it, in that room's own light, and that is what makes matching harder than finishing a new surface. The finish on your wall has moved in color and in sheen since the day it went on, so a fresh mix of the original recipe lands beside it looking new.

Indoors a patch usually has to meet a smooth, orange peel, knockdown or skip trowel texture, and each of those comes from a particular tool, so we match a texture by matching the tool that made it, whether a spray gun, a knife or a trowel. We make a sample panel and hold it against your wall to judge the match. Some blends only disappear if we carry the work out to a corner, and we tell you when yours is one of them.

Interior Plaster Systems: Veneer, Full-Thickness and Cement

Interior plaster systems are their own family, and the plaster on the outside of your house is not one of them. Indoors we work in three families. Two are gypsum, veneer and full-thickness; the third is a cement plaster laid over lath.

That difference is the one that matters most. The surface behind the wall picks which one, because each needs something different to hold onto and each behaves differently against damp. The California Building Code's plaster chapter sets the minimum for any interior stucco application: three coats over metal or wire lath, two over other approved bases, with an exception for products approved for a single coat.

All three harden by holding their water long enough to set, so a hot dry room works against fresh plaster. Chico's average July high sits in the mid-90s, and an unconditioned room in that heat is where dryout happens: the plaster loses its water before it hardens and leaves a weak, powdery surface that has to come back off.

Dry air pulls water from the face of a coat and a dry substrate pulls it from behind, which is suction. Either can bring on a flash set, stiffening a coat faster than we can work it. So we dampen the substrate and shut the room up, doors closed, fans and heat off.

Veneer Plaster Over a Gypsum Base

Veneer plaster is a thin, hard plaster skin troweled over a gypsum base, and the two are separate products with separate published standards. ASTM C844 covers the base panel, often called blueboard, and ASTM C843 covers applying the plaster over it. The material's own specification caps veneer plaster at 1/4 inch, so it is thin by design. It sets chemically rather than by drying out, so it hardens instead of merely stiffening, and you end up with one continuous surface running over reinforced joints rather than a wall of taped and filled seams. It goes onto ordinary framing, so nothing structural in your house changes.

Full-Thickness Gypsum Plaster

Full-thickness plaster is gypsum plaster built up in coats, and ASTM C842 governs how it goes on indoors. It goes over gypsum, metal, masonry or monolithic concrete bases. Monolithic concrete is concrete poured in one piece, such as a wall or a floor cast in place, instead of units laid up in courses. The extra body deadens sound, takes impact better, and lets us bring a wall that has gone out of plane back to a flat face. The same standard sets a hard limit on where it may go, because gypsum plaster is not used outdoors and not in interior wet areas. It is heavier and slower than a veneer, so we specify it where a wall needs it.

Interior Cement Plaster Over Lath

Interior cement plaster is the same portland cement plaster family as your outside wall, put up indoors over lath, and ASTM C1063 covers that lathing and furring for interior work as much as for exterior. We use it where a surface indoors has to take damp, knocks or heat, and a converted garage is the common one.

It is built up in coats with a wait between them, so it is not a one-day surface. The code allows a shorter minimum interval between coats indoors than it requires outdoors. It is also jointed, which means the wall is divided into panels so the plaster has somewhere to move as it shrinks and as the building shifts, instead of relieving itself in a crack across the middle.

Interior Plaster Work in an Occupied House

Indoors, the constraint on a plastering job is your household and its routine. What people ask us before anything else is whether they can go on living in the house while interior plaster work is happening. We contain indoor stucco work and the dust it makes inside the room it belongs in, so the rest of an occupied home stays usable while we are there.

Containment, Dust and Air

Plaster dust is fine enough to travel well past the room it is made in, so we seal that room off before anything is opened. Sheeting closes the doorways and any other opening into the house, with a zipper door set into the plastic, a zipped slit people can pass through without opening the room up. Floors, fixed furniture and air vents are covered before the first tool comes out.

Opening a wall up releases more of that fine dust, so we filter the room's air and draw it out of the room instead of pushing it through the house. We cut and sand inside stucco walls wet, or with a vacuum shroud fitted to the tool so the dust goes into the machine. We do not dry sweep, because a broom lifts settled dust straight back into the air. The floor is vacuumed and wiped down instead.

What Gets Tested Before Anything Is Opened

Construction put up before 1980 gets tested for asbestos and lead before anything is disturbed. Indoors those materials turn up in sprayed ceiling texture, in old patching compound and in old layers of paint, which are the surfaces an interior repair would otherwise sand or scrape first. Disturbing one of them before a test is what turns a contained repair into a much larger job, because once the material is in the air the whole room has to be dealt with rather than one wall. Where a test comes back positive, the work goes to the people licensed for that material, which is not our trade.

How Long a Room Is Out of Use

Three things build the length of an interior plaster job. The system decides how many coats there are, each coat waits on the one below it, and the finished surface has to dry before you can decorate. A veneer sits at the quick end, being thin and setting chemically, and an interior cement plaster sits at the other end on its coat-and-wait schedule.

Setting and drying are not the same stage. Plaster sets while it is still wet and heavy in the wall, and drying is what decides when the room can be painted or papered. The containment stays up throughout, and that stretch is what takes the room out of use, not the hours somebody is working in it. What Changes the Price of Interior Plaster Work

We do not quote interior plaster cost by the square foot, because a rate of that shape would point you at the wrong number. Square-foot rates come from exterior stucco, where one crew works a large open wall in a single run and the area covered accounts for most of the price. Indoors two rooms with the same wall area can land a long way apart, because what sets the price is what is behind the surface and what it takes to work inside a house somebody is living in. Published figures of that kind are approximate, they are not specific to this area, and they are not Chico Elite Stucco's prices.

What we can tell you before anyone visits is that troweled plaster costs more per unit of wall than drywall hung and taped, because it is more coats and more hand time. Three cost drivers do most of the moving, and the number for your room comes from a written estimate after somebody has stood in the room and looked at the wall.

The System and the Surface Area

Nothing moves your number further than the system you choose and the area it covers. The coat count is not a style choice, because the base underneath sets the minimum coat count under the California Building Code. Each coat is a separate visit and a wait before the next one, so coats drive the labor far more than the materials do. Ceilings cost more than walls for the same square footage, because of the setup and the working position. A polished lime finish is more hand time than a smooth troweled one.

What Is Behind the Surface

What you pay for preparation is set by the substrate, not by the finish you picked. On painted or sealed masonry we strip the coating back or lath over it before any plaster is mixed. Where old lath has lost its keys, we reattach the plaster first. Where a wall is well out of plane, we build it back, which is more material and more coats. On an older building we test before we price. None of that can be priced from a photograph, which is why we come and look at the wall.

Access, Protection and Working Around You

The third driver is the one most quote sheets leave off altogether, and indoors it is the work of getting at your room and protecting it. Containment, floor protection and dust control are time spent before any plaster is mixed. A room that has to be emptied and re-set afterwards costs more than one already clear. A stairwell or a high ceiling needs access equipment brought inside the house, and that moves the price the way scaffolding does outdoors. The Standards Behind Interior Plaster

How many coats go on your wall, how thick they are and what they are allowed to sit on are not left to whoever is holding the trowel. Those things are written down, in published ASTM standards and in the California Building Code, so "done properly" is something you can check instead of something you have to believe on a contractor's word.

Four ASTM standards bear on interior plaster. One covers the panel a veneer goes onto, another the veneer itself, a third full-thickness plaster, and the fourth the lath under a cement plaster. The code adds a floor under all of it: three coats wherever the plaster goes over lath, and two on other approved bases. So when you have an estimate in front of you, ask which standard the work is built to and how many coats you are being quoted.

Where Interior Plaster Sits in the C-35 Classification

California licenses this trade through the Contractors State License Board, which defines the C-35 Lathing and Plastering classification around lath, channel work and plaster coatings. The board describes that classification as covering coatings of sand and gypsum, lime or cement which form a permanent surface, applied by trowel or by spray, together with the lath, metal studs and channel work that carry them and with solid plaster partitions. Interior plaster falls inside that description for the same reason exterior plaster does, and lath comes with it.

The board describes a separate drywall classification, covering gypsum wallboard along with the taping and texturing compounds that go over it. The gap between a plastered surface and a taped one is a difference of trade, not only of finish.

When Interior Plaster Is Not the Right Answer

Three situations come up where we tell you not to plaster, or not yet. The limits behind two of them are written into ASTM C842 and into the code, and the third is about your wall.

Wet Areas and Splash Zones

A wet area is a surface that water hits directly, like the wall behind a shower head or a public restroom wall beside a sink, and not a room that only fills with steam. ASTM C842 sets its own restriction against putting gypsum plaster in one. The code carries separate requirements for shower and public toilet walls.

Where a framed wall is going to be finished in cement plaster or tile and take splash, a moisture barrier goes behind that covering, so water that works its way through has something to stop it. What does the job in those rooms is a cement-based system on the right backing, or tile. A humid bathroom with no surface taking direct water is a different question, and often a plasterable one.

When a Level 5 Drywall Finish Is Enough

A Level 5 is the highest drywall finish, a skim coat of joint compound taken across the whole surface rather than over the joints alone, and for a smooth painted wall it is a real answer and a cheaper one. It is not plaster. The Gypsum Association's own finishing document says in plain terms that skim coating will not approximate a plastered surface, and that treated joints and fastener heads may still show once the skim has dried.

What differs is hardness and what happens afterwards. A plaster surface is harder under a knock, and it repairs into itself rather than being patched over. Critical lighting, meaning strong side light raking along a wall, is where the difference shows up first. Where your budget does more good elsewhere in the house, we say so and tell you to take the Level 5.

Walls That Are Still Moving

A hard plaster surface is rigid, so it reports movement rather than absorbing it. A wall that is still settling comes through a new finish along the same line it would have cracked in anyway, and so does a framing problem nobody has fixed or a leak nobody has stopped, whether that leak is inside the wall or arriving through it from outdoors. A polymer-modified finish bridges hairline movement, but it will not hold a moving wall still. Foundation and structural movement are not our call, and we refer them to the people whose call it is. Deal with the cause first, and then we plaster.

Interior Plaster Work Across Butte, Glenn and Tehama Counties

Interior plaster is not held up by the weather the way exterior plastering is, so we can put stucco inside a house through the wet months, when nothing can go on the outside of it. How can I repair damaged interior stucco walls?

Tap the wall with a knuckle first. A surface that is cracked but still sounds solid is filled and refinished. Plaster that sounds hollow has let go of its base and has to be cut back to sound material before anything goes over it. A patch that reappears months later was almost always filled over something that had already let go.

Can stucco be used on interior walls?

Yes, though once it is indoors the trade usually calls it plaster, which is why searching for one turns up the other. What goes on is chosen from three systems, and what decides between them is the surface behind the wall, not what the room is used for.

How long does interior plaster take to cure?

Setting is what makes the plaster hard; drying is what decides when you can decorate. How much mess does interior stucco work make?

Can you put interior stucco over drywall?

Over existing painted drywall it is possible, but it is a bond problem, so the surface has to be prepared and given a base suited to plaster. Usually not. Gypsum plaster is barred outdoors outright, and most of what we put on indoors is gypsum, so it could never have been your exterior wall.
