Stucco Installation Over Framed Walls, Block and Concrete

Stucco installation starts with the substrate, the surface the plaster is applied to. A framed wall, an older plaster wall and a solid concrete or block wall do not receive the same plaster base. The finish you want comes later; the wall underneath sets the coat count, the fastening and the drainage question that has to be answered before you approve the planned work.

Wood Framing and Sheathing

Wood-based sheathing is the panel skin nailed over the studs, and wet cement plaster cannot be applied directly to it. For stucco siding installation on a framed wall, we build a plaster base that gives the cement something to grip and gives incidental water a route down the wall before it can stay against the wood. Cement plaster is heavy, so the corrosion-resistant fasteners and metal lath have to reach the framing rather than holding only in the sheathing, where movement and weight would loosen the wall over time. Traditional Three-Coat Hard-Coat

Traditional hard-coat work uses portland cement plaster over metal lath. Under ASTM C926, the scratch coat is a nominal 3/8 inch, the brown coat is a nominal 3/8 inch and the finish coat is a nominal 1/8 inch, for a nominal 7/8 inch total. Nominal means the thickness aimed for, not a promise that every point on the wall measures exactly the same. The two base coats together give you a nominal 3/4 inch of dense plaster, which is why this system is used where impact resistance and long service life are wanted.

Engineered One-Coat Systems

An engineered one-coat system uses a fiber-reinforced one-coat base applied in one pass, usually over approved foam sheathing. Engineered means the named product has been tested as a set rather than mixed from a site recipe. The manufacturer evaluation report is the written approval that allows one pass instead of three, so the product, backing and fasteners have to match that report. Ask a bidder to identify that report when one-coat is proposed for your wall. At a nominal 3/8 to 1/2 inch, the base is thinner than a three-coat wall, and the shorter application schedule is why builders often ask for it.

EIFS and Synthetic Finishes

EIFS is made from expanded polystyrene foam board, a mesh-reinforced base coat and a synthetic finish coat. We install EIFS when the wall calls for exterior insulation and a synthetic finish rather than a cement-plaster base. It gives the highest thermal value of the three systems because the insulation sits outside the wall. Early face-sealed EIFS relied on the finish as the waterproofing, so water that entered had no exit path. Drainage is now required over framed walls; sealed EIFS is allowed only over concrete or masonry. If you need to know whether an existing wall is EIFS or hard-coat, an inspection settles that.

Behind the Plaster: Barrier, Flashing and Lath

The plaster is the weather surface and the wear surface, but it is not the waterproofing for your wall. The water-resistive barrier, flashing and metal lath sit behind it, and the plaster covers them the same day they become most important. Once the wall is finished, no one can inspect that hidden assembly without opening the wall. If visible mold appears on a wall that gets opened, a qualified independent specialist handles that assessment because testing and removal are their own trade.

The Water-Resistive Barrier

Over wood-based sheathing, the water-resistive barrier goes on first, keeping water off the wall's wood skin. The wall receives either two independent layers of 10-minute Grade D building paper, or one 60-minute layer kept separated from the plaster; those are alternative ways to meet the same requirement. The minute rating means minutes of water resistance in a standard test.

Two loose layers stapled as one plane do not meet the requirement because each layer has to give water its own continuous drainage plane. We lap the barrier so water sheds downward and outward. Chico's dry climate zone is a code classification, not a claim that little rain falls here, so the separate drainage gap required in wetter zones is not mandatory here.

Flashing at Openings and Roof Lines

We integrate flashing, the shaped metal that steers water back out, at window and door heads, sills and roof-to-wall junctions, where the drainage path is interrupted by openings or a roof edge. The flashing is woven into the barrier rather than laid over it, because the order of the layers sends water outward or traps it inward. At a roof edge, kickout flashing diverts roof water before it can run behind the wall. Sealant backs up these pieces; it is not the drainage path.

Metal Lath and Why It Is Held Off the Wall

We install metal lath as the mesh the wet plaster grips. ASTM C1063 requires a metal plaster base to be furred at least 1/4 inch off the surface behind it, meaning the lath is held out from the wall. Self-furring lath is made with dimples that hold the mesh approximately that far out. The trade reason is practical: the scratch coat has to be pressed through and around the metal, because lath fastened flat gives the plaster nothing to wrap and leaves weak contact behind the wall surface. We use corrosion-resistant lath and fasteners because the metal stays inside damp cement.

Weep Screed, Casing Bead and Control Joints

We lay out the accessories with the lath before any plaster is mixed. The weep screed sets drainage at the base, casing bead and corner aid give the wall clean edges, and control joints place movement where the layout allows for it. In a wall exposed to seasonal movement, that layout is part of the design rather than a detail added after the finish is chosen.

At the base of the wall, we install the weep screed as the perforated strip that lets water out. It is corrosion-resistant because it sits at the wettest point on the wall. The screed is installed not less than 4 inches above the earth, or not less than 2 inches above paved areas; those are alternatives for different conditions, not a combined height. The barrier laps over the screed flange so water reaches the outlet. If soil, bark or a raised patio is pressed against your screed, that material stops the drainage.

Casing Bead and Corner Aid

We set casing bead as the metal edge that gives the plaster a clean stop where your wall meets a window, a door, a soffit or another material. The bead also separates plaster from a dissimilar material at an edge, so the finish does not feather out against something that moves differently. We use corner aid to straighten and protect an outside corner. Both accessories are set to the finished plaster thickness, so we fix that depth before the coats go on.

Control Joints and Panel Size

A control joint is a planned break that gives the wall somewhere to move. ASTM C1063 caps a plaster panel, the area between control joints, at 144 square feet, allows no panel dimension over 18 feet and limits the length-to-width ratio to 2.5 to 1. We set the control joints with the lath and align them with openings where the wall already changes. Fine shrinkage cracking is inherent to cement plaster, and joint layout with curing practice influences where the movement appears. Scratch, Brown and Finish: How the Coats Go On

Three-coat stucco has three stages because each coat has a different job. The scratch coat grips the lath, the brown coat flattens the wall and the finish coat gives the surface its final appearance. They are not three passes of the same mix at the same consistency. The waiting periods between them belong to curing, because cement plaster needs time and moisture before the next coat goes on.

The Scratch Coat

The scratch coat is worked in under pressure at a nominal 3/8 inch so the plaster reaches the lath and surrounds the metal instead of sitting on its face. While the plaster is still workable, we score it with horizontal furrows. Scoring means raking the surface so the next coat has grooves to key into, and that scoring gives the scratch coat its name. A thin or dry scratch coat can leave the lath sitting in a void. Flatness is not the goal yet.

The Brown Coat

At a nominal 3/8 inch, the brown coat brings the wall into plane and brings the base coats to a nominal 3/4 inch together. We straighten high and low spots with a long straightedge, then smooth the surface with a float before the plaster sets. That work gives your finish coat an even face to follow. The finish coat is too thin to correct a wavy brown coat. If the brown coat is thinned to gain a day, the weak base can show up later as cracking.

The Finish Coat

At a nominal 1/8 inch, the finish coat is the thinnest coat and carries appearance rather than wall strength. It is the coat you choose for texture and color, and it is the only coat you will keep looking at after the wall is finished. We handle color in two ways. An integrally colored finish has pigment mixed through it, so a chip shows the same color inside the coat. An acrylic finish or other coating can also apply color over the cured wall later. Texture choices belong to the decorative finish decision.

Curing Cement Plaster Through a Chico Summer

Cement plaster gains strength through hydration, which means cement hardens by reacting with water rather than by drying out. A wall that loses mix water before the reaction has run far enough can craze or chalk. Crazing shows as a network of fine surface cracks, and chalking leaves a powdery surface you can rub off. A fresh coat is protected from freezing for at least 24 hours after it sets, which is freeze protection after set, not an interval between coats. ASTM C926 is the specification for applying portland cement plaster. ASTM C1063 is the specification for installing the lath and furring under it. The California Building Code requires not less than three coats over metal or wire lath. The C-35 Classification

The Contractors State License Board is California's licensing authority, and it defines the C-35 Lathing and Plastering classification around lath, metal stud channel work, and plaster coatings. The new plaster has to finish in the same plane as the existing wall, and the joint between old and new has to be designed before the lath goes up. Matching an aged texture and color is a separate stucco repair question, because appearance does not answer how the two wall assemblies meet structurally in place.

Matching the Plane and the System

A traditional three-coat wall finishes at a nominal 7/8 inch, while an engineered one-coat system finishes at a nominal 3/8 to 1/2 inch.
